President William Ruto has urged Kenyans to embrace sports as a tool for empowerment, unity, and national pride.
Speaking during the English Premier League Trophy tour at State House, Nairobi, on October 24, 2025, the President called on citizens to rally behind local talent, including the Harambee Starlets, who are competing in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Gambia.
“As the Premier League trophy begins its Kenyan tour during the Guinness Matchday weekend, I invite all Kenyans to come out and celebrate this historic moment,” President Ruto said.
“Let’s come together to share in the joy of the beautiful game and in the spirit of collaboration that defines us.”
The President emphasized that sports play a vital role in community development, youth empowerment, and national cohesion.
“It’s about empowerment. All these community facilities and the creative economy matter because we know that sports is not just about competition, it’s about empowerment, unity, and national pride,” he stated.
Ruto also encouraged Kenyans to support the Harambee Starlets as they represent the nation on the continental stage.
“I want to ask every Kenyan, wherever they are, let us show up for our talents. At 4:00 p.m., they will be competing against Gambia, and I believe we have what it takes to carry the day,” he said. “Let us show up for our girls. I am confident they will make us proud.”
During his remarks, the President paid tribute to the late Raila Odinga, whom he described as a passionate football fan.
“Unfortunately, we lost one of our big Arsenal fans, the Honorable Raila Odinga. We really feel that we lost somebody who was always in the game with us,” Ruto said, recalling their football conversations.
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed hailed the event as a symbol of resilience and aspiration.
“This coveted cup represents hard work, resilience, and what can happen when you put in the right effort,” he said. Mohamed thanked President Ruto for his dedication to developing football in Kenya, saying, “Africa deserves an award for commitment to football, and I believe it is you.”
Harambee Starlets will host Gambia from 4 pm today, in the first leg of the final round of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) qualifiers at Nyayo National Stadium.
Starlets are aiming for their second appearance in the tournament in a decade, while The Gambia, nicknamed "Scorpions," seek their first qualification after unsuccessful attempts in 2018, 2022, and 2024.
